Kalkatungu Muruu, 2017
Acrylic on canvas
91 x 121 cm
My name is Chern’ee Sutton and I am a contemporary indigenous artist from the Kalkadoon people from the Mount Isa area in Queensland.
This painting is called “Kalkatungu Muruu” which means Kalkadoon Country in the Kalkadoon language.
The Kalkadoon people have ruled the emu foot province for at least the last 60,000 years and have been connected to their lands through their dreaming stories, songs and art. The circles in my painting represent the many campsites scattered around my country that my ancestors have used for thousands of years. When the sun goes down many of these sacred campsites come to life.
