Galya Pwerle

Awelye Atnwengerrp, 2017

Acrylic on linen Acrylic
240 x 125 cm

Galya’s paintings depict traditional women’s ceremonies known as “Awelye Atnwengerrp” which is broadly translated as Women’s Dreaming.

The bold expressive lines in Galya’s paintings are said to represent body paint designs, dancing tracks made in the sand during women’s ceremonies and sacred places where the ceremonies take place.

In this work Galya uses curved and thick brush strokes, overlayed with dots which conceal the body paint design underneath. Her use of deep blues and purples creates a tonal quality that provides a richness and sense of depth to the work.
