Gloria Petyarre Biography

Gloria Petyarre was born around 1945 in Utopia- a community approximately 270 km north east of Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory. She is of the language group Anmatyerre. Gloria began her artistic career as one of the founding members of Utopia Women’s Batik Group in the 1970s. In this role she helped to create a new artistic form as she merged the traditional iconography of the Anmatyerre with the medium of silk. Her innovative and unique style had great influence on others in the group. The use of introduced materials heralded the transition of Aboriginal women’s art from the private to the public domain. From 1977 to 1987 Gloria worked in the medium of Batik, exhibiting with other Utopia women in shows around Australia and abroad.

It is in the medium of acrylic on canvas, however, that Gloria is widely recognised. Her first painting on canvas was commissioned by CAAMA (The Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association) and included in the exhibition titled Utopia Women’s Painting; The First Works of Canvas; a Summer Project 1988 - 1989. From this point Gloria quickly developed a unique way of depicting her wide knowledge and appreciation for her country and Dreaming stories. The primary Dreamings she depicts are Mountain Devil, Bush Medicine and Aknangkere Growth.

Of these, Gloria’s depictions of Bush Medicine Dreaming have become the most recognised and appreciated. These works depict the movement of a particular type of shrub, common to Utopia, which has particular medicinal qualities. The leaves of this plant are collected and then boiled to extract the resin. Following this, the resin is mixed with kangaroo fat which creates a paste that can be stored for up to six months in bush conditions. This medicine is used to heal cuts, wounds, bites, rashes and as an insect repellent. Gloria’s depiction comes from the important ceremonies and traditions of her people in relation to this plant. Each painting shows different aspects from the process and its important links with the land.

Gloria has had a fruitful career, with exhibitions in Australia and abroad. In the early 1990's she travelled to Ireland, London and India as a representative of the Utopia women accompanying the exhibition Utopia - A Picture Story. Gloria's first solo exhibition was at Australian Galleries in New York in 1991. Her paintings have been exhibited in several major survey exhibitions and she has had many solo exhibitions throughout Australia. Gloria Petyarre’s paintings are held in the collection of almost every major Art Gallery in each capital city in Australia, and major galleries in the US, UK and Asia also own her works.

In 1999 Gloria was awarded the prestigious Wynne Prize, an annual exhibition held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
