Tarisse King

Two Tribes, 2013

Acrylic on linen
60 x 210 cm

This painting is inspired by the challenge and excitement of feeling the influence of the mixed backgrounds many of us have. Tarisse paints a spirit figure her father, the late William King, painted in his own art, to show his own mixed cultural background. Having been born in Katherine, N.T and part of the Gurindji tribe, William spent his youth with his wider family there. At the age of 18 William decided to move to Adelaide and spent the remainder of his life living amongst a 'new tribe', an urban environment where he made many new connections. Tarisse reflects on his discussions about this situation and shares this artwork knowing there are many who walk a similar path.
