Debra Young Nakamarra

Debra Young Nakamarra Biography

Debra Young Nakamarra comes from a long line of highly acclaimed artists. She is the daughter of famous Western Desert artists Walangkura Napanangka and Johnny Yungut Tjupurrula and paints alongside sisters Lorraine Yungut Nakamarra and Katherine Marshall Nakamarra.

Born in 1964 in Pintupi country of Papunya, Debra started painting in 1984 after learning about her own Dreamtime stories.

Many of Debra's paintings depict designs associated with the rockhole and cave site of Tjintjintjin, an area west of the Kintore Community in Western Australia. She uses roundels and lines to depict geographical features of the area through which an old woman, Kutungka Napanangka, passed during her travels. At this site Kutungka knew of an ancestral kuniya (snake), which she managed to capture, cook and eat.

Debra is an emerging artist; her works are bold, culturally significant and create a sense of powerful energy.
