Dorothy Robinson Napangardi

Dorothy Robinson Napangardi Biography

Dorothy was born c. 1958 in the bush at Mina Mina, a significant sacred site in a remote area of the Northern Territory. She remembers her early childhood days as being surrounded by her closely knit extended family and filled with unconditional happiness and freedom. Dorothy passed away in June 2013 following a fatal accident.

During the relatively early phase of her artistic career Dorothy painted semi-naturalistic & colourful floral patterns relating to the growth cycle of bush banananas.

In 1997, in what proved to be a significant artistic shift, Dorothy began painting dramatic canvases of the Women’s Digging Stick Dreaming that has been passed down through her patriline. These ethereal canvases have become her signature works.

During the Jukurrpa ,or Dreaming, the Ancestral women gathered to collect the ceremonial digging sticks which had magically emerged from the ground. They then proceeded East, performing rituals of song & dance, to the place known as Jankinyi. Today, a large band of trees stands where the digging sticks once were.

Having begun painting in 1987, her style has developed in a non traditional way and conveys the beauty & mystery of her homelands. Dorothy’s paintings are created by an intricate & fine network of dots & lines which cross and merge with each other. The perspective is both macro and micro.

Dorothy Napangardi’s paintings are internationally acclaimed & highly sought after by curators & collectors alike.

“I really like painting. I really love doing dot paintings. While I am doing my paintings I always have my family in my mind, I have my country in my mind”
