Freddy Purla

My Grandmother's Country, 2020

Acrylic on canvas
150 x 100 cm
59 x 39 in

Freddy's painting depicts a tradition design known as "Awelye Atnwengerrp" which is broadly translated as Women's Dreaming. This is a homage to his grandmother Minnie Pwerle and her sisters, his great aunts Emily, Gayla and Molly Pwerle. Traditionally the women would paint the canvas with their traditional body paint design, which is a series of lines and circles and then they would go on to cover the design with thick brush strokes to hide the traditinal body paint design. Freddy and his family are all traditional owners and custodians of this design that has been passed down from one generation to the other for centuries.
