Janet Long Nakamarra

Dry Waterholes ( Mulju ), 2024

Acrylic on canvas
90 x 95 cm
35 x 37 in

This artwork depicts the 5 major waterholes in the desert where Janet's ancestors once roamed the land. They are dry due to the drought of the desert but like many dry waterholes they still contain water many meters below the ground.

These 5 are amongst those that have underground water and in times of drought Janet's ancestors would rely on these waterholes to survive. The "U" shapes represent the women sitting at the waterholes digging for water. And when the rains would eventually come they would fill these dry waterholes with fresh water again ensuring that survival would continue.
