Bush Onion Dreaming, 2024

Acrylic on canvas
83 x 195 cm
33 x 77 in

Doreen’s paintings depict womens' business and initiation ceremonies. Doreen’s paintings are often a map of the country and the natural features of the surrounding Sandy Creek salt plains.

This artwork depicts the bush onion growing and storks are moving in the wind at Lake Karinyerra. This is near Mt Wedge the birthplace of Doreen's mother. Also depicted is the bush onion in different stages of growth (white and black egg shaped in each corner).

The women use their digging sticks and coolamons to collect the bush onion from the soft soil on the banks of creeks. They are dug up when the grass of the onions has dried out. It can be eaten raw or cooked. This is a very important food which is highly sought after and there are many Dreamtime stories related to the bush onion.
