Atnwelarre (Pencil Yam) in My Country, 2026

Acrylic on canvas
71 x 94 cm
28 x 37 in

This painting depicts yam flowers growing in the artist's country in Utopia. The native yam is known as Atnwelarre and it is a type of creeping plant which covers large ground areas. Its flowers are yellow and the yams are long and skinny. They are an important source of food for the indigenous community in the region where they are grown.

Ceremonies are performed to ensure that the yams are in abundant year after year.
