Didgeridoos
Wood
$495 - $2800
Various carved and varnished didgeridoos made by the Naiuwa family in QLD.
Originating in Arnhem Land this wind instrument was known as a "yidaki" and created by the Yolngu people but now it is commonly known as the didgeridoo and is found across Australia. Made from eucalyptus timber hollowed out by termites, the didgeridoo is perhaps the oldest musical instrument in the world. Ranging in length from 1-3 metres, the didgeridoo is used in ceremony and is intrinsic to Aboriginal culture and spirituality.
The family behind Naiuwa didgeridoos live in Far North Queensland, but originated from Butchulla (Hervel Bay), Yiddinji. The animals depicted on these didgeridoos are kangaroos, cassowary, snakes, turtles, goannas and barramundi. These animals are also traditional food sources of Australian people. Many of them are totems of various tribes. The didgeridoo if properly respected will bring harmony to your family as it echoes through its sound the voices of peace and goodwill that mother earth has given to the wood. Our name NAIUWA means Green Turtle, it represents the time and patience it takes to produce a didgeridoo of this quality. One didgeridoo can take up to 18 months to produce.
