My Country, 2011
Acrylic on linen
180 x 120 cm
71 x 47 in
Kudditji paints his country where he remembers taking the younger boys through their initiation ceremonies. He would teach them about the emu ancestors and at the same time how to hunt emu. This is the country he paints.
Powerfully rich in colour, this piece has a vibrant and commanding energy. Bold reds contrast a calm white and grey centre, harmonised through raw brush strokes. This luminous piece with its touches of orange and yellow has a great depth unique to Kudditji’s practice.
He has been compared to the Abstract Expressionist Mark Rothko due to his utilisation of bold colours and geometric forms.
