My Country, 2013
Acrylic on linen
290 x 195 cm
116 x 78 in
Kudditji paints his country where he remembers taking the younger boys through their initiation ceremonies. He would teach them about the emu ancestors and at the same time how to hunt emu. This is the country he paints.
Powerfully rich in colour, this piece has a vibrant and commanding energy. Bold reds contrast a calm white and grey centre, harmonised through raw brushstrokes. This luminous piece with its touches of orange and yellow has a great depth unique to Kudditji’s practice. He has been compared to the Impressionists because of his ability to play with light on the canvas and also to Mark Rothko due to his utilisation of squares.
