Kudditji Kngwarreye

My Country, 2013

Acrylic on linen
90 x 75 cm
35 x 30 in

Kudditji paints his country where he remembers taking the younger boys through their initiation ceremonies. He would teach them about the emu ancestors and at the same time how to hunt emu. This is the country he paints. With strong and rich shades of reds and browns, this powerful piece exudes a stark sense of allure and energy. Warm tones of reds contrast the soft yellowish-browns, which are unified through raw brush strokes. This luminous piece with its touches of purple has a great depth unique to Kudditji’s practice. He has been compared to the Abstract Expressionist Mark Rothko due to his utilisation of bold colours and geometric forms.
