Freda Price Biography

Freda Price Pitjara was born in around 1965 in the famous Aboriginal artist community of Utopia (350km north east of Alice Springs). Freda Price is daughter of renowned artist Anna Price Pitjara and a descendant of the incredible Utopian artist, the late Emily Kame Kngwarreye.

Freda’s dreaming was passed down to her by her mother and as such she paints, ‘My Mother’s Story’. Freda’s dreaming is a topographical depiction of her Mother’s Country, depicting the sacred sites, focusing often on Yam seeds, which are abundant in Utopia.

For untold generations, the Anmatyerre people have been harvesting the seeds from this plant, to be ground down into a fine powder to make damper. It is a highly nutritious and hardy food source in the desert. The sacred plant is celebrated in women’s ceremonies, through song, dance and body painting.

Freda’s works, like her mother are intricately detailed with a strong use of monochrome colours.
